It’s been nearly six months since we last posted to the blog, so I thought it was time to share the new things that are happening at Sunbird Farms, like our Silver-Grey Dorkings.
We’ve had quite a busy summer, and are wrapping things up, as always, with a dusty harvest season. As the ground shakes and the nuts fall, another season comes to a close. What started last winter, a time of rest for our heirloom Ashley walnuts, finishes with a crescendo as the fruit of their labor (the trees) and rattled to the dirt floor below, swept up, and whisked away to be clean, dried and sold. In a testament to truly being “hyper-local,” our walnuts travel exactly 1/4 mile to the dehydrator, or closer to 1/2 mile if you count the driving distance. They’re grown, harvested, and prepared for sale all within eyesight of our orchard.
As for our birds, things are continuing to develop. As ever, we strive to increase our focus. This coming spring we hope to have a vibrant farm of just a few select premium breeds, including the Silver-Grey Dorking, the Barbezieux, Black/Blue Copper Marans, Light Sussex, and our newest project, the famous Crevecoeur. We have made these selections based on a combination of heritage, temperament, adaptability, production and need for improvement. We can’t wait…
There will be plenty more to come on these breeds, the “whats” and the “whys,” but we are excited to be sharing our thoughts with you again, and look forward to a time of rest and rejuvenation in the coming months.
Blessings,
SF
